QOTD: Quote of the Day
So, to the people who were in power today who are making those national security calls, I don’t care if you’re a Republican or a Democrat or an Independent or anything else, we should wish them the best. Because they have got a challenge the magnitude of which we have not seen since World War II.
…I think he’s done. The Putin era is over. The only thing we need to now understand is the level of damage he’s going to do as he goes. And I think that could be substantial. – Jon Huntsman
Jon Huntsman served as governor of Utah (2005–09) and as U.S. ambassador to China (2009–11) and to Russia (2017–19). He ran for the Republican presidential nomination in 2012.

This is the viewpoint of a politician and is opposite to the academic Chomsky / Mearsheimer (long held viewpoint) view that no Russian leader could accept the Ukraine ‘going west’ (and so therefore Putin is not central to the issue of conflict but only how Russia deals with it). They say the erosion of balance of power situation post fall of the Berlin Wall is key here. Mearsheimer reckons this US focus on places other than Asia / China could be eroding confidence and straining alliances the US has in Asia.
Thanks for the good comments, Joe. Did you know —> Brezhnev’s ethnicity was given as Ukrainian in some documents, including his passport,
I hope he’s right. But most Republican polaticians are not trustworthy. Not today and at least not since they threw their lot in with the climate science deniers 30 years ago. And not since obstructing anything and everything President Obama tried to accomplish. And not since their scorched earth policies in denying people’s right to vote. And if they were part of the t-Rump administration they are sure as hell not to be trusted. The era they should be declaring over is their own.
Thanks your comments, Mike. Huntsman one of the few principled Rs and certainly pro-science. He penned this after the other guy’s last SOTU. 👇🏽
