Have Markets Priced the Presidential Campaign?

It is our sense the conventional wisdom has assumed an Obama victory in November.  The polling shows a much closer race, in fact, a dead heat.  Romney has opened a 10 point lead among independents, who, on the margin, will ultimately decide on the next President.

Here is Politico on their Battleground Poll,

The former Massachusetts governor has opened up a 10-point lead, 48 percent to 38 percent, among independents in a poll conducted Sunday, April 29 through Thursday, May 3 and a 6-point lead among those who describe themselves as “extremely likely” to vote in November. Obama led Romney by 9 points overall in POLITICO’s February’s poll.

But there are suggestions that these numbers are extremely fluid: Obama holds double-digit leads over the presumptive Republican nominee on issues such as who will better handle foreign policy and who will stand up for the middle class and on “sharing your values.” But enduring concern about the economy — by far the most important issue to voters — keeps the president in a tenuous position despite employment numbers that show slight but steady improvement.

We also think the markets will celebrate a Romney victory.  This is not a political statement but our market opinion.   It’s going to be an interesting campaign.

Will 1340 Hold?

The S&P500 has broke its initial support at 1360 and has held above 1340.  The question is will the JP Morgan news be the catalyst for a true test of 1340?   The markets are getting very choppy and its hard to find a positive catalyst to send us higher in the near term.  Stay tuned.

Tell Us It Ain’t So, JP MO!

This doesn’t come at good time for the markets.    Bloomberg is reporting,

JPMorgan Chase & Co. (JPM) said it lost about $2 billion tied to synthetic credit securities after positions taken by its chief investment office were riskier than expected.

“This portfolio has proven to be riskier, more volatile and less effective as an economic hedge than the firm previously believed,” the New York-based company said today in a quarterly securities filing. JPMorgan declined 5.5 percent to $38.50 in extended trading at 4:51 p.m. in New York.

The stock is getting hammered in AH.    S&P5oo futures down 12 points.

S&P500 Closes Above Important Support

After getting spanked in the morning the S&P500 was able to clawback some of its losses and close above 1360, which has been a key support level.   We have our doubts this will hold and won’t be getting lathered up about risk until Europe settles,  which could be some time.

The market is feeling a bit robotish again and driven by short-term traders.  Witness the early selling and late short covering.   Stay tuned.

Athens still able to borrow despite political uncertainty

Here’s an analyst saying Greek living standards would plunge by 80 percent if they leave the Euro.   This must assume most Greeks have their savings in Greek banks or local assets, which raises the issue of capital flight as the biggest short-term risk to Europe right now, in our opinion.  If you were a Spaniard or an Italian would you have your savings in a local bank?
